Two Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers have been arrested after being caught on camera accepting bribes from public transport operators on a major highway near Harare.
The officers, identified as Sergeant Chifamba and Constable Gunzva, were filmed taking payments from vehicles along the Harare-Mutare Road near the Mabvuku turn-off. The footage, which circulated widely on social media, led to their swift detention.
Police spokesman Paul Nyathi announced that both officers face criminal charges and internal disciplinary action.
“These are bad apples who do not deserve to be serving in the Police Service,” said Nyathi in an official statement.
The arrests come amid growing public concern over police corruption in Zimbabwe’s capital. Recent reports suggest officers at ZBC traffic lights on Beatrice Road have been stopping motorists for minor infractions and allegedly demanding bribes at Mbare Police Station before releasing their vehicles.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police leadership has taken a firm stance on the issue, with Nyathi emphasising that the Commissioner-General is determined to enforce the law “without fear or favor.”
This incident highlights ongoing efforts to tackle corruption within Zimbabwe’s law enforcement agencies, as authorities face pressure to maintain public trust and professional standards.
