Two people were killed and another seriously injured when a Blue Circle bus collided with a stationary truck and hit a tree on the Harare-Bulawayo Highway in Zimbabwe. The accident occurred on Monday at the 75km peg of the major route connecting the country’s two largest cities.
Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the incident but withheld the names of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.
According to Inspector Mangena, the bus, driven by Owen Tendai Kuvheya (36), was travelling from Harare to Bulawayo with 50 passengers on board. It struck a broken-down truck being attended to by Ilot Moyo (45), before veering off the road and hitting a tree.
Two passengers were thrown from the bus and died at the scene. A third passenger was seriously injured and taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH), along with Moyo, who suffered an arm injury.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety on Zimbabwe’s major highways.
