Veteran South African actor Setlhabi Taunyane, known as Bra Kop, has disclosed that his family has rejected his wife of 17 years due to her Zimbabwean nationality.
In a recent interview on the King David Studio podcast, the former “Rhythm City” star spoke about the xenophobic attitudes that have affected his family life.
“My family never really accepted my wife,” Taunyane said. He added that he had been excluded from family events, including a recent cousin’s funeral, due to his marriage.
The actor explained that the situation “has not changed because I am married to ‘Lekwere-kwere’,” using a derogatory term for foreigners in South Africa.
Taunyane believes the discrimination extends beyond his family, stating, “Once you are abandoned by your family, this thing grows bigger, even outside the family.”
Despite these challenges, Taunyane shared the story of how he met his wife, describing an instant connection that led to their long-term relationship.
The actor also touched on his Pan-African beliefs, which influenced his outlook on love and relationships across the continent.
This revelation highlights ongoing issues of xenophobia in South Africa, even within family structures, and the personal toll it takes on those affected.
