Malawi’s Top Court dismisses an application to discontinue Presidential election result case

August 15, 2019

Malawi’s Supreme Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal to have the presidential election results case thrown out of court.

This means that the constitutional court will continue with the presidential election results case this Friday in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe.

Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda made the landmark ruling today in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe.

President Peter Mutharika’s lawyers appealed to the Supreme Court of Appeal an earlier ruling made by Constitutional court which dismissed their application to dismiss the case.

The ruling by the Supreme Court of Appeal means the Constitutional court will this Friday continue with the hearing of the Presidential elections results case.

Malawi Congress Party-MCP and United Transformation Movement-UTM President Dr Saulosi Chilima are challenging the re-election of Mutharika, saying the May 21 Tripartite elections were marred by serious irregularities.
