MDC activists in Mberengwa are living in fear following alleged attempts to abduct their colleagues by suspected State security agents.

Two activists have since gone into hiding after accusations of mobilising rural voters to ditch Zanu PF for the MDC.

Takavafira Zhou, MDC Midlands provincial spokesperson confirmed the development, saying Avoid Trouble Mashura an organising secretary survived an abduction attempt on Monday. One Luwelin Sibanda is said to have gone into hiding after unidentified people visited his home.

“We are certainly perturbed by the continued bullish, callousness, and harassment of innocent civilians exercising their freedom of association, which is guaranteed in the Constitution.

“We reiterate our long-held view that security intelligence in the 21st century has moved from thuggery and barbarism to use of intellect. We further remind the operatives to realise that Zimbabwe is a democratic and multi-party State and that they must, therefore, respect freedom of association and expression, let alone the democratic rights of MDC activists,” Zhou said.

Political and civil society activists have been on the receiving end of an alleged clampdown to silence them.
