ANC’s Thandi Modise elected National Assembly Speaker

JOHANNESBURG – Thandi Modise, former National Council of Provinces Chair was elected National Assembly Speaker on Wednesday.

She replaces Baleka Mbete who withdrew her name from the ANC MP list on Tuesday.

Lechesa Tsenoli was elected unopposed as her deputy.

The ANC retained its majority in the National Assembly with 230 seats.

However, the governing party shed 19 seats from the previous parliament.

The party returns as the governing party after wining the 2019 Election with 57.51 percent.
