Blessing Goronga, who lives with his two brothers in Swindon is due to be deported on September 13.

But the Guardian reports that politicians and campaigners have pleaded with the home secretary not to send the human rights activist home.

Dick Taverne, a Lib Dem peer, said deporting the Swindon man would be intolerable and “an eternal blot on Britain’s record”.

Lloyd Kuveya of Amnesty told the Guardian: “The decision of the Home Office must be challenged and information placed before the courts to show that sending back Blessing to be subjected to politican persecution is in violation of international law.”

A Home Office spokesman said: “All applications are considered on their individual merits and in accordance with the immigration rules.”
